A Garden for the Birds
The City of Madison and the Madison Arts Council has awarded VanChaMasShe two grant awards to further improve and beautify our neighborhood by installing a bird sanctuary located at the green space behind Hoyt School. The sanctuary space will include artwork by renowned local artist Mike Burns and native plantings to attract migrating and wintering birds.
Bill Engelmann, neighbor and owner of Sandstone Nursery in Mineral Point, has provided landscape design services and will oversee the installation.
Here’s how you can help!
Please join us behind Hoyt School 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug 18th and Aug 25th for installation and planting!!
- Aug 18th: site prep and removal of existing vegetation
- Aug 25th: plant and mulch perennials, trees and shrubs
Please bring water bottle, work gloves, shovels (and hand trowels for planting day). Questions? Contact Bill at bill@sandstonenursery.com.
Volunteer to help water!
The tender plants will need attention over the first few weeks until they are established. Watering schedule TBD – please contact kgredman@gmail.com if you can water and we’ll pull together a schedule.
Donate!
We received approximately $6,000 towards our total grant request of $10,000. We still have yet to fund a water feature for the birds and an interpretive sign. Checks can be made payable to: VanChaMasShe Neighborhood Association Please see Darcy: 2825 Van Hise Ave. or email ddederich@uwalumni.com.
Any additional funds will go towards further improving the green space containment area with bird-friendly rain garden plants.
THANKS!
